What’s the Best Age for Getting BOTOX?

At Tarola Plastic Surgery in Murfreesboro, TN, we are proud to offer a number of cosmetic procedures and treatments to help our clients enhance their natural beauty significantly. Often, we have people come in who are frustrated by folds, wrinkles, and lines that only deepen over time. If you are frustrated by signs of facial aging, you may be a good candidate for one of our most popular anti-aging treatments, BOTOX. Here’s what you need to know about this treatment.

What’s the Best Age for Getting BOTOX?

There is no universal best age for getting BOTOX, as the FDA has approved this treatment for individuals who are at least 18 years of age when it is being used for cosmetic purposes. When used for medical purposes, this injectable muscle relaxant can be administered to children. As long as you are old enough to receive this treatment, the best age for you to get BOTOX is the age at which you start to notice the effects of very tense muscles.

Other Frequently Asked Questions Answered

How Should I Prepare for My Treatment Session?

There are several preparation steps you will need to take before your injectable muscle relaxant treatment takes place. For example, you will need to avoid the use of any pharmaceutical that can cause blood-thinning for seven days prior to treatment. Just be sure to get approval from your doctor if you take a blood-thinner daily.

Another important preparation step to take prior to your treatment is to not consume alcohol or caffeine for 24 hours before your appointment. These substances can dehydrate your skin and increase your blood pressure. Additionally, it is essential that you protect your skin from the sun for two weeks prior to your appointment. We will not be able to treat you if your skin is irritated.

How Long Will My Treatment Session Take?

We will advise you on how long you can expect your treatment to take during your initial consultation. It is hard to say how long your appointment will take because session lengths vary based on several factors, including the number of problems you are correcting, the types of cosmetic concerns you have, and the severity of your concerns.

Sometimes, treatment sessions only take 10 to 15 minutes. Other times, appointments take closer to an hour. For example, you may need to devote 30 minutes to your appointment if you need both BOTOX injections and an injectable dermal filler.

Am I a Good Candidate for This Treatment?

If you are at least 18 years of age and neither pregnant nor nursing, there is a very good chance that you will qualify for this injectable anti-aging treatment. However, you need to attend an initial consultation to discuss your concerns, goals, and medical history. We need to make sure that this treatment will be both safe and effective for you.

This treatment will only be effective for you if you have concerns caused by overactive muscles. If you have wrinkles or folds caused by volume loss, one or more injectable dermal fillers will be more appropriate for you. If you suffer from certain medical conditions, this treatment will be deemed inappropriate for you for safety reasons. For instance, you will be considered a poor candidate for this treatment if you suffer from:

  • A bleeding disorder
  • A rash at the injection site
  • Poorly managed diabetes

How Soon Will I Be Able to Enjoy My Desired Results?

You may start seeing the results of your treatment just 72 to 96 hours after your injection session. However, it may be 10 to 14 days before you see the final results of your treatment. Several factors affect how long it takes to enjoy the final results of your treatment. For example, you can generally expect to see your desired results later if you are treating severe concerns rather than mild or moderate concerns.

How Long Will the Results of My Treatment Last?

Generally, you can expect your BOTOX results to last for two to six months. It is most likely that your results will only last for two months if you have never received this treatment before. Typically, we administer a smaller dose the first time someone receives this treatment, so your results look natural and we can get a better understanding of how your body responds to this treatment.

What Can I Do to Extend the Longevity of My Results?

There are several things you can do to extend the longevity of your results. For example, you can enjoy your ideal results for longer if you limit sun exposure after your treatment. UVC damage can break down the collagen in your skin, thinning it. This makes the skin more susceptible to wrinkling when the underlying muscles wrinkle. Additionally, you can:

  • Eat nutritiously
  • Reduce stress
  • Not smoke
