What is Liposuction?
One of the most common cosmetic procedures performed in the United States, liposuction removes areas of excess fat and improves the contour and shape of treated areas. It has been innovated and refined over the past decade to include several different techniques. It can be used to treat a multitude of areas on the body, including:
- Thighs
- Hips
- Buttocks
- Waist and abdomen
- Upper arms
- Back
- Inner knee
- Calves and ankles
- Cheeks, chin and neck
While it is a successful procedure on its own, liposuction is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as a tummy tuck, breast reduction or facelift. These options can be discussed with Dr. Tarola during your consultation.
Liposuction is also effective for men and has shown to be successful in the male chin and waist areas as well as when paired with male breast reduction surgery.
During liposuction, small, inconspicuous incisions are placed around the treated areas. A thin, hollow tube is then inserted through the incisions and used to loosen excess fat in a back and forth motion. Finally, the fat is surgically vacuumed from the area.
What is Recovery Like?
Dr. Tarola will discuss the risks and side effects typically associated with liposuction during your consultation, but generally it is well tolerated with mild side effects such as swelling and bruising. You may be fitted with a compression garment in addition to your bandages in order to reduce swelling and maintain your body’s new contours.
You will also be instructed about how to care for your incision sites after surgery in order to minimize the risk of infection and complications. It is generally recommended to begin moving around as quickly as possible after surgery to decrease the risk of clotting, although Dr. Tarola will monitor your healing process and and advise you accordingly when normal activities may be resumed.
Provided that you maintain a stable body weight and appropriate general fitness, the results of liposuction are long-lasting. You will notice a change almost immediately after surgery, although it will take 4-6 months before the effects of the liposuction are fully visible. A majority of the swelling should be gone by about 3 weeks, but it can take up to 6 months or 9 months after surgery.
