Combat Signs of Aging with a Facelift

Facelift

A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure done to improve the visible signs of aging on your face and neck. The process varies from minimally invasive to surgery that is more extensive. A facelift removes excess skin and re-drapes the skin on the face and neck while also tightening underlying muscles and tissues. Facelifts correct mid-face sagging, jowls and double chin, and marionette lines as well.

When to consider a Facelift

You may be a good candidate for facelift surgery if you experience:

  • Sagging in the middle of the face
  • Creases along the nose towards the corner of the mouth
  • Deep creases below the lower eyelids
  • Loss of skin volume on the lower face
  • Excess fat deposits under the jaw, chin, and loose skin

The Best Candidate for a Facelift

To be considered a suitable candidate for a facelift, the following qualities are evaluated:

  • Skin that retains some degree of flexibility and elasticity
  • A well-defined underlying bone structure
  • General good health without any serious health conditions
  • Loose skin

You also need to know what a facelift can and cannot accomplish for you.

Preparation

To prepare for a facelift surgery, you will need to wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of surgery. Also, arrange for someone to drive you home after the surgery and to stay with you the first two days after surgery.

If you are a smoker, you will be advised to quit. This will promote your healing and ensure that you recover properly. If you take certain vitamin supplements or aspirin, the doctor may advise you to stop taking them for a period.

The Facelift Procedure

Facelift surgery is done under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Incisions are made in natural creases such as behind or in front of the ears and in the scalp and hairline. The surgeon will then access the connective tissue and muscle beneath the skin and make the necessary manipulations. A typical rhytidectomy surgery may take between two and six hours, depending on your individual circumstances. During this time, the surgeon may also remove excess fat or skin.

After surgery is complete, the surgeon closes the incisions using stitches, and your face will be bandaged. It is important to follow instructions on caring for and handling the bandages at home.

Risks

Tightness, redness, or swelling are most commonly experienced after facelift surgery. You will be provided with aftercare instructions, and your healing will be monitored by our medical team. All risks and side effects will be discussed with you prior to surgery.
